THE EVOLVING RESPONSE TO COVID-19
COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on our world, with so many lives lost to a deadly disease and an uncertain future ahead of us.
On 9th May, the Government used their daily COVID-19 briefing to announce an acceleration of cycling and walking infrastructure by providing a £2 billion package for councils.
The funding commitment, although not all new, shows the impact that COVID-19 has already had on our transport networks. With early predictions suggesting that journeys will reduce by 33% and public transport unable to accommodate large numbers during social distancing measures, the focus is on cycling and walking to fill these gaps. The transport network in and around our cities will change dramatically before our eyes, just as our working day will change to accommodate a different way of working.
I have expanded on my thoughts in a detailed post available below with a focus on how this announcement will impact developments and planning applications coming forward in the next few months. There will be a fundamental need to undertake pre-app scoping for most developments which will in turn bring an increased pressure on highway departments to set out what they will accept as baseline capacity assessments going forward.

Dynamic Transport Planning
The announcement made by the Secretary of State for Transport during the Government’s daily Coronavirus briefing on Saturday 9th May 2020 aims to promote walking and cycling as the centre and clear focus of the strategy to address the Covid-19 challenge of social distancing and the associated impact on capacity of public transport services.
